Instant Leadership Course!
Here is your instant Leadership Course. Rather than spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a Leadership Course, here are some things you can do right now to improve your ability as a leader and a manager.
Ten Simple Things You Can do Right Now That are Better Than Going to a Leadership Course:
- Listen Better. Listening is the most underrated and underused skill in business (or in life). If you make a conscious effort to improve your listening skills, you will advance your skill as a leader exponentially. Ironically, trying to find a leadership course on listening skills is difficult.
- Set Clear Expectations. One of the key leadership skills is painting a clear and compelling picture for your people of where you want them to go, and what you want them to do. Any leadership course you take should include this.
- Hold People Accountable. Once you’ve told people what you want from them, you need to hold them to account for those expectations. Holding people accountable is an area that many leaders have discomfort around.
- Offer Constant Feedback. Offering regular and quality feedback is the easiest of the leadership skills to understand, and one of the hardest to do well. You don’t need to go to a leadership course to offer regular feedback to your people.
- Use Positive Reinforcement. Nothing will accelerate great performance better or faster than the appropriate use of positive reinforcement.
- Address Difficult Issues Promptly. Failure to address difficult issues will cause performance to suffer not only from the individual, but from the rest of your team as well. A leader may be reluctant to deal with difficult issues, but s/he should seek out help (a leadership course, or otherwise) to build confidence in this area.
- Meet One on One With Your People Regularly. Regular one on one meetings are often overlooked by leaders. Quality and consistent one on one meetings saves managers time and energy by providing a forum to reinforce expectations and to offer feedback on progress. Rather than trying to find a leadership course on this important skill, check out Wily Manager’s podcast on One on One meetings.
- Communicate Constantly. The managers with the best leadership skills are very simply those who communicate the most. Both quality and quantity of communication efforts are important.
- Do What You Say You Will. This is the only way for a new manager to create trust amongst people, peers, the boss and the organization. This does not require a leadership course, but rather the discipline to follow through.
- Make More Mistakes. What?!?! It is important to make mistakes otherwise you are not taking enough risk. The important thing for a manager is to not repeat mistakes, and be humble and honest about mistakes with everyone.
